Learning Site (Rikke Luther, Copenhagen/Berlin and Cecilia Wendt, Malmö) was formed in 2004. It is a platform for exchange and dialogue between people from different disciplines, practices and backgrounds who have a common interest in learning. Luther and Wendt were also among the founders of the group N55 in 1994 and worked with the group until 2003.
Learning Site focuses on the local conditions in which its art practice is located. This entails a critical examination of the material resources and economies available within specific situations. Each situation may entail examination of economic and environmental factors, but also labor rights, property rights and the production and distribution of knowledge, which are investigated in tandem to produce a variety of different critical perspectives. The duo often works in collaboration with other artists, research scientists, sociologists, city planners, and lawyers. Luther and Wendt will participate in the exhibition (In)dependant People that is a part of the Reykjavik Arts Festival 2012 and are here in Iceland to do a work for that exhibition.
The lecture of Learning Site takes place at the National Gallery of Iceland on Saturday, the 3rd of March. Luther and Wendt will among other things discuss the ideology behind their work and how they choose to use art as a tool to gain and distribute knowledge. The lecture starts at 13 PM and entrance is free of charge.

°°°°°

Regin Weihe Dalsgaard is a photographer born in Thorshavn, Faroe Islands, in 1984. Dalsgaard has primarily worked as a news photographer for magazines but it were his photographs of pilot whale killing in his homeland that grabbed peoples attention last year. Pilot whale killing is an age-old tradition in the Faroe Islands. People from all professions then take a break from their daily life and help with the hunting that takes place on the beach. Dalsgaard saw news on Facebook of this particular pilot whale killing on a morning in July last year and hurried to the beach. Things happened quickly and the photographs were all taken during a period of 2 minutes. What Dalsgaard found interesting were the people themselves and their actions and that is what his photographs show.
Regin Dalsgaard claims to have been interested in the act of pilot whale killing for a long time. He approaches this highly disputed subject in a neutral way and says that he sees himself as a messenger. Dalsgaard gives his lecture at the National Gallery of Iceland on Saturday, the 17th of March, the same day as the Icelandic artist Pétur Thomsen speaks about his works. In their works both Thomsen and Dalsgaard choose to deal with controversial subjects that relate to nature and both artists approach them in a neutral manner. In their lectures they will discuss why they take that particular path and what matters of opinion they have had to deal with in their work. The lecture starts at 13:00 PM and entrance is free of charge.

°°°°°

Pétur Thomsen (b. 1973) has in recent years attracted attention, both in Iceland and abroad, for his projects that show photographs of nature that man has in one way or another transformed according to his needs. The exhibition Imported Landscape has travelled to many places but it shows photographs taken at Kárahnjúkar after construction of the power plant there began in 2003. In the projects Umhverfing and Ásfjall, which also show the transformation of nature by man, Thomsen photographs changes of the natural landscape in the outskirts of Reykjavík and Hafnarfjörður after the building of new suburbs began there. Pétur Thomsen has received numerous awards and prizes for his work. In 2004 he won The 10th LVMH young artists’ award. In 2005 he was selected by the Musée de L’Élysée in Lausanne to exhibit his works at reGeneration, 50 Photographers of Tomorrow.
Even though Pétur Thomsen chooses highly disputed construction projects as his subjects, he approaches them with a certain neutrality, in a calm manner over a long period of time. Thomsen gives a lecture on his works and his approach on Saturday, the 17th of March, the same day as Regin Dalsgaard from the Faroe Islands discusses his photographs of pilot whale killing.

He is currently on sabbatical leave from his position at the Swedish Arts Grants Committee´s International Exchange Programme for Visual Art, Iaspis. With a background in philosophy, architectural and aesthetic theory, he is an internationally engaged curator, writer, editor and lecturer. He has previously worked at Moderna Museet, Södertörn University and the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. Engqvist is also co-editor, with Maria Lantz, of Dharavi: Documenting Informalities (Stockholm 2008, New Dehli 2009), that is a part of a project that Engvist will speak about in his lecture at the National Gallery.

In his lecture on Saturday, the 24th of March, Engquist will talk about a seminar, book and exhibition-project in Bombay and Stockholm aimed at puncturing the presupposition that a ‘slum’ is mere desperation and chaos. Affirming the warmth, creativity and organizational capacity in slums around the world, the projects can be described as investigations into how art and architecture can contribute to social and political change. The curatorial team of the exhibition in Bombay consisted of Jonatan Habib Engqvist, Anna Erlandson, Maria Lantz and Michele Masucci. It had concrete goals: to increase knowledge about informal living in cities all over the world; to suggest more participatory, complex and inclusive descriptions of the urban poor; and to work toward increased infrastructure in informal areas by searching for new collaborations and networks. By allowing the voice of the informal to speak, they hoped to build an inclusive space for negotiation and communication, both inside and outside the traditional contexts of contemporary art. The lecture starts at 13:00 PM and entrance is free of charge.

People may have different motivations to express themselves artistically; and for Rúrí (b. 1951) art is the language. It allows her to express herself in ways that would not have been viable through the written or spoken word. She touches on issues that matter to all of us; she raises questions concerning life and coexistence, of cosmic coherence; she challenges the relativity of objects and phenomena and queries the coordinate system that man has established to structure his surroundings. Rúrí’s art cannot be classified and labeled, it appears in the most diverse forms: sometimes cool in design, then inconceivably poetic, it puts the viewer by turns in the role of a conventional onlooker or an active participant. Her works are conceptual, in the sense that they are linked to precise ideas and based on theory or perception, but they all have a tangible and sensory aspect.
The fragility of nature and man’s behavior towards it has been one of the matters that Rúrí has repeatedly discussed in her art. Rúrí’s art is direct and her opinions hardly escape the attention of the onlookers of works such as Archive – Endangered Waters from 2003. The work was first shown at the Icelandic pavilion at the Venice Biennale. It consists of 52 big transparent color slides that all show Icelandic waterfalls that were endangered because of plans of building power plants on the highland. The work is among the nearly 100 works that are shown at the retrospective of Rúrí that is on display at the National Gallery from March 2nd to May 6th 2012.
In her lecture Rúrí will discuss her approach on environmental matters and in what light she views the role of the artist. The lecture will be held on Saturday, the 24th of March, at 13:00 and entrance is free of charge.

°°°°°

They develop models for social and artistic practice with the interest to design organizational structures that question the relativity of freedom. They use art platform to render public spaces for interaction and engagement of the social groups, evoking local communities and encouraging their cultural and political imagination.

Combining the tools of new and traditional media, Urbonas’s work frequently involves collective activities such as workshops, lectures, debates, TV programs, Internet chat-rooms and public protests that stand at the intersection of art, technology and social criticism. The Urbonas are the cofounders of JUTEMPUS interdisciplinary art program, VILMA (Vilnius Interdisciplinary Lab for Media Art), and VOICE, a net based publication on media culture. Their works were exhibited at the Sao Paulo, Berlin, Moscow, Lyon and Gwangju and Venice Biennales, Manifesta and Documenta exhibitions – among numerous other international shows, including a solo show at MACBA in Barcelona. Gediminas Urbonas is an Associate Professor in the Art, Culture and Technology Program at MIT. Nomeda Urbonas is Ph.D. researcher at Norwegian University for Science and Technology. They are among participants in the exhibition (In)dependant People that is a part of the Reykjavík Arts Festival 2012.

In their lecture at the National Gallery on Saturday, the 31st of March, Nomeda and Gediminas Urbonas will talk about the research project UTO-PIA that was a part of the international contemporary art exhibition Contemporary Art Archipelago in 2011. In it Nomeda and Gediminas Urbonas worked with experimental media and communication techniques to map heterotopias – spaces that are remote and simultaneously next to us, the places that are connected and disconnected at the same time. The lecture starts at 13:00 and entrance is free of charge.

Nomeda og Gediminas Urbonas eru þekkt fyrir verkefni sín sem kanna með fjölþættum hætti ýmsar þær deilur og mótsagnir sem efnahagslegar, samfélagslegar og pólitískar aðstæður í Sovétríkjunum sálugu hafa fætt af sér. Þau nota myndlistina sem vettvang fyrir samskipti og þátttöku ólíkra samfélagshópa, kalla með verkum sínum fram ólíkar raddir og vilja með þeim hætti örva menningarlegt og pólitískt ímyndunarafl á hverjum stað fyrir sig. Verk þeirra fela í sér áhugaverða notkun bæði hefðbundinna og óhefðbundinna miðla og fela þau oft í sér vinnusmiðjur, fyrirlestra, umræður, sjónvarpsþætti, spjallþræði á vefnum og jafnvel mótmæli. Þannig standa verkefni Nomedu og Gediminas Urbonas á mörkum myndlistar, tækni og samfélagslegrar gagnrýni.

Í fyrirlestri sínum á Panora munu þau fjalla um verkefnið UTO-PIA sem fjallar um Eystrasaltið og hvernig ólíkir þættir sem tengjast ríkjunum við það mætast þar á hafsbotninum. Verkefnið teygði sig í margar spennandi áttir, allt frá bændum sem hafa helgað starf sitt framleiðslu á lífrænni sauðamjólk yfir í neðanjarðarbyrgi frá tímum kalda stríðsins og þaðan til ostagerðar á Krít, svo fátt eitt sé nefnt.

Gediminas Urbonas starfar sem dósent við MIT-háskólann í Boston og Nomeda Urbonas vinnur að rannsóknum við NTNU-háskólann í Þrándheimi. Þau taka þátt í sýningunni (Ó)sjálfstætt fólk sem er hluti af Listahátíð í Reykjavík. Since 1993 she has worked as an artist, curator and producer. Winderen researches the hidden depths with the latest technology; her work reveals the complexity and strangeness of the unseen world beneath. The audio topography of the oceans and the depth of ice crevasses is brought to the surface. She is concerned with finding sound from hidden sources, like blind field recording. Over the last seven years she has collected recordings made by hydrophones, from rivers, shores and the ocean in Asia, Europe and America, from glaciers in Greenland, Iceland and Norway.
Winderen is drawn to the fact that in the depths of the oceans there are invisible but audible soundscapes, about which we are largely ignorant, even if the oceans cover 70% of our planet. She also says she likes the immateriality of a sound work and the openness it can have for both associative and direct experience and sensory perception. In her lecture at the National Gallery on Saturday, the 14th of April, she will discuss her works, what motivates her art and perform a sound work for the audience. The lecture starts at 13:00 PM and entrance is free of charge.

Með nýjustu tækni hefur Winderen m.a. dregið fram hljóð djúpt af sjávarbotni ólíkra heimshluta og hljóð úr dýpstu jökulsprungum á Grænlandi, Íslandi og í Noregi. Hún segist sjálf kunna að meta hversu óáþreifanleg hljóðverk séu og þykir sá eiginleiki þeirra gera þau opin fyrir hvers kyns beina og óbeina upplifun og skynjun áheyrenda.

Winderen útskrifaðist frá Goldsmiths-háskólanum í Lundúnum en hafði áður numið stærðfræði og efnafræði við Óslóarháskóla. Frá árinu 1993 hefur hún starfað sem listamaður, sýningarstjóri og framleiðandi. Winderen vinnur hljóðverk sín með ýmsum hætti, flytur þau beint, notar þau sem hluta af innsetningum o.s.frv. Á fyrirlestrinum mun Winderen ræða um verk sín, hvatann að baki þeim og flytja eitt af hljóðverkum sínum fyrir gesti.

The museologist Bergsveinn Þórsson will in his lecture talk about the artist Aron from Kangeq (1822–1869) that lived in Greenland. Originally Aron from Kangeq was a sealer but after getting tuberculosis he was forced to stay ashore. He turned to art, drawing, painting and carving. His works are seen as a very important source when it comes to reading and understanding the history of Greenland, especially since they show a Greenlandic point of view, which is rare in sources from this time. His work are for example a unique source about the encounters of Inuits and Scandinavians.

Around 1850 Aron met Hinrik Rink, a Danish geographer that had been collecting Greenlandic folk tales. Rink got Aron to illustrate the stories and the results were published in the book Grønlandske Folkesagn in 1859. Most of Aron’s work was moved to Copenhagen and preserved at the National Museum in Denmark. In the 1980’s the people of Greenland got back this national treasure and now Aron’s drawings are preserved at the National Gallery in Greenland.

Bergsveinn Þórsson will speak about Aron, his works and its position in the Greenlandic cultural heritage, in relation to the complex relationship between knowledge and power, art and politics. Þórsson is a museologist with a background in art history and educational theory. He works as a project manager for the educational department at the Reykjavík City Museum. His lecture takes place on Saturday, the 5th of May, and starts at 13:00 PM. Entrance is free of charge.

°°°°°
